In 2005, I was stuck in a deep rut: in debt, lonely, and wondering how the hell to make something of myself.

But now, in 2017?

I’m blown away to be celebrating 10 amazing years of having run Progressive Property alongside my tireless business partner Mark Homer, and wondering what the next 10 will bring.

I wouldn’t call myself an “expert” in buy to let property investment – I’m still learning, and every day is a school day – but Mark and I want to do everything we can to help you on your journey towards property investment success. That’s why on Progressive Property’s 10th anniversary we’re offering you a video jam-packed with insights into our experiences, aiming to provide value and great take-homes that you can use moving forwards.

I recently ran a competition challenging Progressive Property Community members to show off their interviewing skills, offering the prize of shadowing me, Mark and the Progressive Property team for 10 days, as well as interviewing us both for a special 10th anniversary video. We had some nifty entries, but community member Jon Bartlett convinced us that he was the right guy to grill us during our 10th anniversary extravaganza.

In this video, we dug down into the nitty gritty of how Progressive Property came to be. Our chat with Jon was a warts-and-all guide through our buy to let property investment career’s highs, lows, challenges and obstacles, including as many worthwhile tips as possible about what makes Progressive Property tick.

Running Progressive Property with Mark and doing our best to help buy to let property investors like you move forwards in your careers has been humbling and rewarding. We started the company as a two-man property investment project, but it has since grown into a £50m+ operation with over 700 units bought and sold, several bestselling books published, over 450,000 subscriber/investors in the community and a steadily growing team of over 70 staff. We feel like the best thing we can do now is offer you every bit of buy to let property knowledge we have learned along the way, with the aim of giving you an advantage over the competition.

Our journey has not always been easy. Way back in 2005, I was a struggling artist in debt for over £50,000, doing my best to cope with money woes and extreme stress. Alternatively, Mark Homer was a frustrated investor, keen to escape the monotony of his well-paid but dull job. The end of December ’05 was a time of intense personal strife for me, following my dad having a nervous breakdown right in front of his pub customers. That was the worst day of my life, but also strangely the best, as it spurred me into action and made me vow to take control of my future. Mark and I first met at a property meeting held in a Holiday Inn – more on that here in the interview – which I was attending due to my change in. That chance encounter ended up altering the whole course of my life, and led to us to form Progressive Property in 2007 with the aim of creating a new stream of reliable and ideally passive income through buy to let property investment.

During the early years of Progressive Property, we worked on developing our industry knowledge and formulating our own methods for making buy to let property investment work; systems we had tested, amended and fine-tuned through first-hand experience. After investing successfully during that first year, we decided to use our proven systems to give something back to the community, teaching entrepreneurs like you about how to gain more financial freedom through buy to let property investment. This, of course, saw us investing time and money into focusing on property investment education.

There were plenty of challenges we needed to overcome – which you can hear more about in the full-length interview here – and this will no doubt be the same for you. Sometimes you will feel alone, nervous, or unsure what to do next. Other times you will face obstacles and even failure. Mark and I have faced plenty of hurdles, such as unprofitable ventures, a treacherous economic climate during the credit crunch, collapsed deals and last-minute joint-venture breakdowns, but ultimately it was triumphing over these problems that provided us with our biggest achievements. Your challenges promote and nurture growth, and should be embraced rather than avoided.

The benefits of buy to let property investment and passive income are too great to give up on without a fight, as they will help provide both you and further generations of your family with income and peace of mind.
